The Facts

Loyola College is part of a larger Jesuit-run system of colleges throughout the country.  This particular college is located in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, and is home to just over 3,330 undergraduate students and approximately 2,620 graduate students.  The school offers a limited number of B.A.s; the classics, communication, economics, education, English, fine arts, history, modern languages, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, speech-language pathology and audiology, and theology.  The psychology and communications programs are particularly good, and quite popular among students as well.  The school also offers several B.S. degrees in the areas of biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering science, and mathematical sciences. 

Admission to the college is fairly par for the course; last year, about 6,610 students applied and 4,675 were admitted; of those, about 916 matriculated.  The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1130 to 1310 and over 71% of them were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class, with an average high school GPA of 3.41.

The college has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and students say that in general, their teachers make themselves fairly accessible, particularly during their office hours.  Like any other college, the introductory classes tend to be quite a bit larger, but calsses generally dwindle in size as they become more advanced and/or more specific. Students also remark that the academics are not terrifically competitive, and students are generally pretty laid back about final exams and papers.  Students say that most people at the school are spiritual in one way or another, which is a characteristic that helps them pull through the more stressful times.  The school actually encourages students to find their own spirituality and attend the on-campus services when convenient, but it is not pushed upon students in any way.

The Social Scene

Students often complain about the lack of diversity of the school, but they say that in general, students are really friendly.  The city of Baltimore offers a lot of great entertainment options, and students love to head out to the city’s many great bars and clubs on the weekends.  There are no fraternities and sororities at the college, but students have no problem throwing dorm parties.  The school has a lot of student-run organizations and clubs, including clubs in religion, sports, nationalities, politics, and environmental causes.

Sports are a pretty big deal at the school, and the Greyhounds compete in the NCAA Division I level.  The school offers many different sports, and some of the most popular include both men and women’s basketball, lacrosse, soccer, crew, swimming and diving, and even rugby.  Students love to show up to cheer their various teams on! The dating scene is pretty vibrant at Loyola College, although not very diverse.  Apparently, the guys and girls are quite attractive, even if they all look the same.

“There is no diversity here, and I don’t think there’s a single person here who isn’t white.”

“The religious influence can get pretty overbearing.  People here think they are literally the best thing since sliced bread.”

“There isn’t an on-campus party scene.  To find a party atmosphere, you have to pay for it at a club or a bar.”
