The Facts
Manchester College is a small, private liberal arts institution located in the town of North Manchester, Indiana, and is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. The school is home to over 1,300 undergraduate students and approximately 30 graduate and part-time professional students, who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences and preprofessional studies. The academic programs offered are accounting, business and economics, pre-medicine, education, psychology, social sciences, and the humanities. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business (which has a popular program in banking and finance), communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, health professions (which includes an innovative program in medical laboratory technology), and social sciences (a large program that has majors as diverse as peace studies and economics). Some of the most popular majors at Manchester College are education, accounting, biology, chemistry, and communication studies.
Admission to Manchester College is fairly competitive among the few students who apply; most applicants tend to have been very academically successful in the past. Last year, over 1,100 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 855 of those students were accepted; of thsoe, about 335 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1015 to 1090, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 67% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
Manchester College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and most students agree that the small class sizes are one of the best parts of attending the school. In fact, it is rare to find a class at any level with more than fifteen students. The professors are also very beloved at the college, and go out of their way to help students get as much out of the class as possible.
The Social Scene
The town of North Manchester is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment besides a few local bars and a movie theater or two. However, most Manchester students don’t seem to mind the peace and quiet in the town; there’s plenty going on within the borders of the campus. The college has no fraternities or sororities; however, the school does boast over 55 student-run groups and organizations that run the gamut from chorale to a T.V. and radio station. Students are highly involved in campus life, and say it’s easy to get involved in the on-campus community. Drinking and partying does happen at the college, but it’s not very visible, or popular for that matter.
The dating scene is rather limited, but we hear there are plenty of highly attractive individuals to be found...
What’s Good
“I love the whole atmosphere of the campus; it’s very calm and fosters that academic, intellectual spirit.”
“From day one, the administration really takes care of you. They are pretty earnest in their efforts.”
“The classes are really wonderful, and held in the spirit of discussion and debate, which makes them very engaging.”
What’s Bad
“There is absolutely nothing to do in the town around campus. And we aren’t really that close to any cities worth going to on the weekends.”
“All people seem to want to do here is study. No one seems particularly interested in having a whole lot of fun.”
“I think we need a bit more campus unity. No one has much school spirit here.”
