The Facts
Midamerica Nazarene University is a small, private institution located in the town of Olathe, Kansas, and is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, as the title suggests. The school is home to over 1,300 undergraduate students and approximately 600 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The university’s academic programs offer broad majors in the areas of agriculture (which offers a very unique major in international agriculture), biological science, business (home to the perennially popular major in business administration and management), communications and the arts (which includes an interesting program in modern language), computer and physical science, education,(home to some unique programs including athletic training, speech correction, and Christian education), health professions (which only offers a major in nursing), and the social sciences. Some of the most popular majors at Midamerica Nazarene are management, humanities and human relations, elementary education, and business administration.
Admission to Midamerica Nazarene University is not terribly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; however, the overall number of applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 500 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 486 of those students were accepted; of those, about 260 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1100 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 64% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
Midamerica Nazarene University has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and it is rare to find a class at any level with more than 18 students. Students agree that their professors do a great job of making themselves available for assistance, and do their best to make classes engaging and interesting for students.
The Social Scene
The town of Olathe is quite suburban and family oriented, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, downtown Kansas City is only about 20 minutes away by car, and most students spend their weekends hanging out in the more urban scene. The university has no fraternities or sororities, and most students seem to prefer to keep it that way. The school does have, however, over 44 student groups and organizations on campus that run the gamut from an agriculture club to a jazz band, to a radio and television station.
The dating scene at the school isn’t terrifically diverse, but the whole of Kansas City is at your disposal...
What’s Good
“It’s really nice being in such close proximity to Kansas City; it’s a nice place to hang out on the weekends.”
“The classes are really small here, and the discussions we have tend to be very interesting.”
“There always seems to be enough student housing. The administration does a great job with that whole issue.”
What’s Bad
“The whole demographic here is all the same. You have no new people to meet after awhile.”
“I kind of wish we had more to do on campus. If you want to have fun, you have to get off the campus itself.”
“There are a lot of people here who seem to think they can just skate through and blow off classes.”
