The Facts

Newman University is a small, private institution located in the city of Wichita, Kansas, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. The school is home to over 1,200 undergraduate students and approximately 800 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in one of the university’s five undergraduate schools or the graduate school, which offer academic programs in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological science (home to a rather innovative biochemistry program), business (an always popular and large program with majors as diverse as accounting as well as marketing and distribution), communications and the arts (home to wonderful programs in music and art), computer and physical science (which offers a great program in information sciences and systems), education, engineering and environmental design (which only offers a major in pre engineering), health professions (a large program with a very diverse range of preprofessional majors), and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include English, business, math, teacher education, as well as human services.

Admission to Newman University is not terribly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; however, the overall number of qualified applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 550 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 500 of those students were accepted; of those, about 300 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1100 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 65% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.

Newman University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and it is rare to find a class at any level with more than 18 students. Most of the classes are discussion-based, and all students get a chance to have their voice heard.

The Social Scene

The city of Wichita is quite vibrant, and offers students plenty in the way of entertainment, including restaurants, museums, shops, cafes, bars, galleries and clubs. Students spend most of their weekends exploring the city; however, the campus has a fair amount of activity as well. There are no fraternities or sororities, but there are many student clubs and organizations that are constantly holding and organizing various on-campus events that appeal to everyone’s interests, and bring the student body together.
