Northwestern State University of Louisiana Application
The Facts
The Northwestern State University of Louisiana is a moderately sized public school that is part of the larger University of Louisiana system, and is located in the small town of Natchitoches, about sixty miles south of Shreveport. The university is home to over 7,200 undergraduate students and approximately 3,000 graduate and part-time professional students who study at one of the seven undergraduate schools or the graduate school. The schools offer programs in the academic divisions of business, education, liberal arts, nursing, and science and technology. These schools offer a broad range of majors in the areas of biological science, business, communications and the arts (which includes a terrific journalism program), computer and physical science (home to a unique information science and systems program), education, engineering and environmental design, health professions, and social sciences (which is home to a wonderful natural history museum and an anthropology program). Some of the most popular majors are nursing, education, elementary education, liberal arts, and general studies.
Admission to Northwestern State University of Louisiana is not competitive in the least, as nearly all of the students who apply to the school are accepted. Last year, over 4,400 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 4,320 of those students were accepted; of those, 2,175 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1000 to 1070, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 26. Additionally, more than 68% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.58.
The Northwestern State University of Louisiana has a high student to faculty ratio of 23:1, and many of the general education courses and even some of the upper level courses are held in large lecture halls. Students do get opportunities to take smaller seminar courses, but even those are just supplements of larger lecture courses. In general, professors get high marks from students in terms of accessibility, although there are many who seem to disappear right after class.
The Social Scene
The town of Natchitoches itself isn’t terribly exciting, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment. Shreveport isn’t too far away, but most students just hang out on campus, which is always teeming with activities. The school is home to 18 national fraternities and sororities, and they basically govern the on-campus social life. Students are often scrambling to join the Greek organizations as soon as possible, as they ensure a built-in social life. Drinking is definitely the most popular form of social interaction, especially in massive party settings, if you get my drift...
The dating scene is just as hopping as the party scene; I don’t know if I’d call a frat party very romantic, but I guess it’s whatever floats your boat...
What’s Good
“There is always something happening on campus so you would never know you’re living in such a sleepy town.”
“Everyone, freshmen included, is allowed to have a car on campus, which is extremely convenient.”
“People here are surprisingly inclusive, even with all the Greeks around.”
What’s Bad
“If you like loud, crowded keg parties, then this school’s for you. I, however, loathe them.”
“The food in the dining halls is not worth consuming. Get a microwave as fast as you can!”
“The classes are just too large, and you feel anonymous, just another number in the mass.”
