The Facts
Nova Southeastern University is a large, private, liberal arts and sciences university located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is home to over 5,757 undergraduate students and approximately 19,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The university primarily caters to graduate students; however, their undergraduate program is steadily gaining steam. The university is divided into several smaller graduate and undergraduate colleges including schools of liberal arts, sciences, business, health sciences, education, biological science, computer and physical science, and social sciences. The school is perhaps best known for its science programs, which include a fantastic, hands-on marine biology program, as well as for its business program, which has quite an array of internship opportunities in the Fort Lauderdale area and beyond. Some of the most popular majors include early childhood education, business, biology, health sciences, computer science, psychology, marine biology, and general education studies.
Admission to Nova Southeastern University is not as competitive as other private schools of its size; however, the number of students who apply, particularly from out of state, has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 15,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 9,000 of those students were admitted; of those, about 6,000 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1010, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 27. Additionally, more than 40% of those admitted were in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.4.
Nova Southeastern University has an excellent dismal student to faculty ratio of 22:1, and there are over 678 full time faculty members for both graduate and undergraduate students. All professors have an open door policy. With the class sizes usually smaller than 22 students, everyone gets a chance to participate, and get a significant amount of one on one attention.
The Social Scene
The city of Fort Lauderdale offers students nightlife and entertainment fun from the downtown clubs and bars of downtown, Las Olas, and The Riverwalk to the world class restaurants, meuseums, and The Hard Rock Café. There are plenty of beautiful beaches nearby that are very popular for after class and as weekend hangouts. The school is also home to several national Greek fraternities and sororities.NSU is home to NCAA Division II Athletics with basketball, baseball, cross country, diving, golf, soccer, swimming and track available for men and basketball, cheerleading, cross country, diving, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, and volleyball available for women.
The dating scene is quite diverse ethnically, and the school has quite a few international students... perhaps a beach sunset would do...
What’s Good
“The science programs are great. The professors are constantly doing their own research, and bringing their findings in to class.”
“Even though the classes tend to be huge, the professors do the best they can, and end up being really informative and engaging.”
“The dorms are better than many I’ve seen at other colleges. You actually have room for some extra stuff!”
What’s Bad
“If you don’t like keg parties, your options here are pretty limited. You’ll do a lot of DVD watching all alone...”
“I wouldn’t recommend the dorm food here. If you can, get a hot plate and cook your own stuff, unless you want to brave the cafeteria waters...”
