Oklahoma State University Application
The Facts
Oklahoma State University is a large, public, state school located in the town of Stillwater, Oklahoma and is home to over 16,400 undergraduate students and approximately 4,888 graduate and part-time professional students. The university is divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges, including schools of management and accounting, mechanical, aerospace, electrical and computer engineering, animal science, agricultural economics, elementary education, early childhood education, hotel and restaurant management, psychology, journalism, and veterinary science. Some of the most popular majors include animal science, mechanical engineering, marketing, elementary education, and electrical engineering.
Admission to Oklahoma State University is not terrifically competitive; however, the applicant pool has been steadily growing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 6,630 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 5,930 of those students were accepted; of those, about 3,484 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 990 to 1210, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 26. Additionally, over 51% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.49.
Oklahoma State University has a poor student to faculty ratio of 21:1, and most of the classes at the school are held in large lecture format, with several hundred students. Many of the classes are taught by graduate assistants, and students often complain that they have yet to be taught by an actual professor. There are a few professors who are known for really caring about their students and making real efforts to help them out; however, they are reportedly rather few and far between.
The Social Scene
The town of Stillwater, Oklahoma is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, there are a few bars, shops, and cafes in the area that are quite popular with students and relatively affordable. Most students do own cars, and both Oklahoma City and Tulsa are fairly quick drives, and are popular weekend road trip destinations.
The school has a rather large amount of fraternities and sororities, and they definitely are the driving force of on-campus social life. The Greek houses throw a large number of weekend bashes with quite a bit of drinking, which is definitely a popular mode of social interaction, and sometimes gets a bit out of hand. The Greek houses also are very involved in charities and social causes, and host many on-campus fundraisers.
The dating scene is fairly exciting, but you should expect a lot of burly jocks and cheerleaders.

What’s Bad
“The classes are way too big, and you end up feeling like a totally anonymous number.”
“A lot of the graduate assistants that teach classes don’t really know what they’re talking about, and could care less.”
“The on-campus housing is pretty bad, and you are never sure if you are going to get it from one year to the next.”
