The Facts

Purdue University Calumet is a small branch of the larger public Purdue University system which has five campuses scattered throughout the state. This particular branch is located in the town of Hammond, Indiana, and is home to over 5,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses at one of the university’s twelve undergraduate schools or the graduate school, which offer academic programs in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The academic divisions offer a broad range of majors in the areas of biological science (a program with majors as diverse as biotechnology and zoology), business (which includes popular majors in the areas of banking and finance, as well as management), communications and the arts (home to a wonderful program in broadcasting), computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design (a huge program including departments in construction technology, mechanical engineering, as well as industrial technology), health professions, and the social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include engineering, business, behavioral sciences, and nursing.

Admission to Purdue University Calumet is not competitive in the least, particularly compared to its fellow campuses, as most students who apply are admitted. Last year, over 1,200 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 1,180 of those students were admitted; of those, about 700 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 880 to 1010, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 24. Additionally, more than 25% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.5.

Purdue University Calumet has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and although some of the general education and introductory courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a small seminar class where students get the chance to discuss the content of the previous lecture.

The Social Scene

The town of Hammond is actually quite urban, and offers students all of the expected amenities for an area of urban sprawl. The large city of Chicago is only about 25 miles away, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of it vibrant social and cultural offerings. The university is home to six national fraternities and sororities that are quite popular with students. On the weekends, as at many schools, the Greeks throw parties that are well attended and primarily fueled by drinking. However, Purdue is not what you’d call an out of control party school, so don’t worry!

The dating scene is quite diverse, and full of very attractive potential dates...

What’s Good

“I love being so close to Chicago. The weekends are always awesome because you have time to explore the city.”

“The professors here are extremely dedicated to this place, and it shows.”

“The party scene is just right; it doesn’t get too wild, but there are always parties worth going to.”

What’s Bad

“Sure, Chicago is not that far away, but the traffic is so terrible that it’s not even worth attempting to go.”

“I hate all the general education requirements we have to go through. They’re just a bit excessive.”

“There aren’t enough dorms for the students. And off-campus housing around here isn’t cheap.”
