Rochester Institute of Technology Application
The Facts
The Rochester Institute of Technology is a large technical institute located in town of Rochester, New York, and is home to over 10,635 undergraduate students and approximately 2,300 graduate and part-time professional students. RIT is divided up into several undergraduate colleges, including schools of applied science and technology, business, computing and information sciences, engineering, imaging arts and sciences, liberal arts, science, and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. The institute is home to about 1,100 deaf and hearing impaired students who are uniquely catered to. RIT offers its students over 200 undergraduate degrees; some of the most popular choices include information technology, computer science, mechanical engineering, photography, and electrical engineering.
Admission to the Rochester Institute of Technology is pretty competitive, though not nearly as competitive as some of the other technical schools such as MIT. Last year, over 8,320 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 5,800 of those students were accepted; of those, about 2,200 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1330, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 29. Additionally, over 65% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.5.
The Rochester Institute of Technology has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1; it is rare to find a class with more than 18 students, and the majority have even fewer. Most of the classes are very hands-on, and students are able to participate in many innovative projects, usually working one-on-one with their professors. Students say that the support of their professors is much needed because the academics are quite intense and can be extremely competitive among students.
The Social Scene
The town of Rochester is located in the Western portion of New York State, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, for students who have cars, both Niagara Falls and the Canadian city of Toronto are only a couple of hours away, and are popular weekend road trip options. There are a few fraternities and sororities at the school, but they aren’t really an overwhelming presence on campus.
There are many student-run clubs and organizations to choose from at RIT, running the gamut from a theater group to the Electronic Gaming Society. The school is also extremely diverse, and is made up of students from more than 24 different countries around the world.
The dating scene is unique in that there are many many more men than women, so we hear that fights over the gals are quite frequent...how sweet!

“The campus is really great; it's quite old, but it's kept in great and spiffy shape.”
What’s Bad

“The academics are incredibly intense, and they basically take over your life, and you never have time for any fun.”
“If you don’t have a car, you’re pretty much stuck here.”
