The Facts

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is a rather small, private, technological institute located in the town of Terre Haute, Indiana, and is home to over 1,710 undergraduate students and approximately 145 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is perhaps best known for its programs in the areas of engineering, mathematics, as well as the rather unique science education. The school only offers its students about 13 undergraduate majors, however, all the programs are paid much attention to, and alumni are constantly getting some of the best engineering and scientific jobs in the nation. The degrees are varied and range from biomedical engineering to computer sciences, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, as well as computer engineering.

Admission to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is not terrifically competitive numerically, however, the students that comprise the applicant pool are often very motivated and have a strong idea of their intended future careers. Last year, over 3,200 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 2,260 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 500 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1230 to an impressive 1410, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 27 to 32. Additionally, over 95% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.8.

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 13:1, and teachers get awesome reviews from students in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out. Most of the classes are held in laboratory form, and students work hands on with their peers and professors on various projects, and learn to work as a team. Students are also able to participate in a large amount of internships and co-ops at various companies and small businesses.

The Social Scene

The town of Terre-Haute, Indiana doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, there are some local attractions such as a bowling alley and a movie theater that are affordable and quite popular with students. Most of the students do own cars, which are almost a necessity when it comes to getting around, and weekend road trips to the nearby city of Indianapolis is a popular option.

There are a large amount of fraternities and sororities at the school, which are quite popular with students, and basically govern the on campus social life. The weekends are usually filled with rowdy keg parties at the frats that are well attended and are really the only thing to do around town.

The dating scene is a bit lopsided; the school has about 82% men and only about 18% women, so chances of meeting a guy seem to be on the women's’ side.

What’s Good

“The preprofessional programs are just incredible, and the internships possibilities are endless.”

What’s Bad

“There are no women here! It’s completely impossible to meet a date, unless you date other guys.”

“There is nothing to do in Terre Haute expect bowl, and that gets really old really fast.”

“The academics are incredibly intense here, and the unhealthy amount of competition can really get to you.”
