University of Saint Francis Application
The Facts
The University of Saint Francis is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Joliet, Illinois, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The school is home to over 1,100 undergraduate students and approximately 1,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s 4 undergraduate or 3 graduate schools which include academic programs in both the liberal arts and sciences, as well as preprofessional studies. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (which includes a popular program in recreational facilities management) communications and the arts, (home to a great journalism program) computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, (which includes a popular program in computer technology) health professions, (a large program which includes everything from radiograph medical technology to allied health) as well as the social sciences. The University of Saint Francis offers students a fairly wide range of majors both in the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of biology, education, business, as well as nursing.
Admission to the University of Saint Francis is quite competitive, and the overall number of highly qualified students who apply increases with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, more than 1,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 800 of those students were admitted. Eventually however, only about 350 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1080 to 1120, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 30. Additionally, more than 78% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
The University of Saint Francis has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 18:1, however, there are many other private schools of comparable size that manage to keep theirs significantly lower. However, many students agree that one of the best qualities of the school is the faculty, who have a clear and strong dedication to the school and their individual students, making themselves available as often as possible to give assistance and answer questions.
The Social Scene
The town of Joliet, Illinois is basically part of the urban sprawl of the city of Chicago, which is only about 35 miles to the northwest. Many students venture into the vibrant city on the weekends to take advantage of its entertainment and cultural options, which happen to be very student friendly. The school has no fraternities or sororities, which is just fine with students, who would rather hang out in small groups or take advantage of the nearby city life. The administration has a very strict dry policy, making drinking pretty much nonexistent on campus, although it certainly does happen every once in awhile.
The dating scene may not be dazzlingly diverse, however, the students are friendly, and quite dazzling themselves, so we’re told...
What’s Good
“I love the whole atmosphere at this school. People really look out for each other, and you feel taken care of.”
”The dorms are surprisingly comfortable, and you actually have some elbow room, which is always nice.”
“The professors rock! I want to be like them when I grow up!”
What’s Bad
“We’re just far enough away from Chicago that it’s a hassle to get there. The traffic is absolutely horrendous.”
“Everyone always has their noses in everyone else’s business. It’s annoying.”
“We just don’t have parties. Ever.”
