The Facts
Saint Lawrence University is a rather moderately sized private liberal arts and sciences school located in the town of Canton, New York, and is home for over 2,115 undergraduate students and approximately 130 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is perhaps best known for its terrific environmental studies program, in which students live in outdoor tent dwellings in the Adirondacks for a semester, and have most of their classes outdoors! The school is definitely unconventional, and most of the classes are also team taught by professors, and students are encouraged to explore all of the fields that they can. The school offers its students a large amount of majors in a wide range of areas, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of psychology, English, government, economics, history, as well as biology.
Admission to Saint Lawrence University is quite competitive, although not as competitive as some of the other small East Coast liberal arts schools. Last years, over 3,100 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,800 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 566 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1040 to 1250, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 27. Additionally, over 68% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.37.
Saint Lawrence University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 12:1, and perhaps one of the best qualities of the school is its professor’s accessibility and genuine caring for their students. As previously said, most classes are team taught and students work very closely with their peers and professors on a variety on hands-on projects. The school is also very well-known for its international programs that have study opportunities in France, Germany and other countries that are actually open to students as early as their freshmen year, and they are even able to participate in international internships.
The Social Scene
The town of Canton, New York is quite small, and while it doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, the residents are friendly, and have several popular coffee shops and bars that are popular with students. The town is located on the border of Canada, which makes the winters freezing, and winter sports very popular. Most students own cars, so weekend road trips to Toronto and Ottawa are very popular options with students.
There are several national fraternities and sororities, however, they aren’t really a very major presence on campus, although they do throw some pretty popular parties occasionally. Usually, when students want to drink, they just head up to Canada where the legal drinking age is 19...
The dating scene is pretty friendly, however, it isn’t very diverse, and you should expect lots and lots of Gap-clad guys and girls alike.

What’s Bad
“You feel really isolated up here, and unless you have a car to explore, it can be pretty depressing.”
“The party scene is kind of lame, and the parties that do happen are usually broken up very early on.”
“The student population here is very very homogenous, and people are all alike.”
