Saint Xavier University Application
The Facts
Saint Xavier University is a rather small, private institution located in the city of Chicago, Illinois, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The school was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846, and now is home to over 2,400 undergraduate students and approximately 3,100 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s 4 undergraduate schools or 4 graduate schools, which offer academic programs in the areas of the liberal arts and sciences, as well as in preprofessional studies. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (which includes a popular international business management program) communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, (home to an interesting program in foreign language education) health professions, as well as the social sciences. Saint Xavier University offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and in preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business, nursing, as well as education.
Admission to Saint Xavier University is not particularly competitive numerically, however, those who do apply tend to have been very academically successful in the past. Last year, over 1,700 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,160 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 400 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1060 to 1100, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 28. Additionally, more than 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.68.
Saint Xavier University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and many students agree that the amount of attention they receive from their professors is one of the best facets of attending the school. The professors all have open door policies where students are able to come and talk to them about anything, not necessarily just school related.
The Social Scene
The Saint Xavier campus itself is actually located about 15 miles southwest of the city of Chicago itself, however, access by public transportation to the city center is quite easy. In fact, many students head into Chicago on the weekends to take advantage of its vibrant cultural and social scene, which also happens to be very student friendly, offering discounts on many movies, museums, and performances. Saint Xavier has no fraternities or sororities, however, the school does have over 40 student run groups and organizations that offer something for every interest. Many students are involved in these groups, and they set up many events such as Oktoberfest, Xavierfest, and the ever-popular Boat Bash that are popular and well-attended by students. Drinking happens at the school, but due to the administration’s strict “dry policy,” it’s difficult to sneak any in.
The dating scene is good, and we hear that the guys in particular are quite easy on the eyes...
What’s Good

What’s Bad
“Everything’s just a little too intimate here for me. It’s like the administration is watching your every move.”
“I wish we had more of a party scene actually on campus. People usually just leave for the city if they want to have fun.”
“There are a lot of people here from the same demographic, which gets pretty old after awhile. You begin to crave change.”
