The Facts
Seattle Pacific University is a rather moderately sized private, Christian university whose motto pretty much sums up the school’s mission: “A Christian university of the liberal arts engaging the culture, changing the world.” The school is located in the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington, and is home to over 3,800 undergraduate, graduate and part-time professional students. The school has actually been around for quite a long time, particularly for the fairly new Pacific Northwest area; SPU was established in 1891. The university is actually divided up into several smaller colleges including schools of arts and sciences which includes programs in fine arts, humanities, science and engineering, as well as social and behavioral sciences, and also the schools of business and economics, education, health sciences, psychology, family and community, as well as theology. The school offers its students more than 53 undergraduate majors, 11 masters degrees, as well as 2 doctoral programs. The majorial choices are broad, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business administration, nursing, psychology, biology, teaching certification, political sciences, english, communication, art, as well as sociology.
Admission to Seattle Pacific University grows increasingly competitive with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 3,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,000 of those students were admitted. Eventually however, only about 500 of those admitted actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1140, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26 to 32. Additionally, over 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
Many students agree that one of the best qualities of SPU is the attention they receive from their professors, and they say that their teachers are always there for them and willing to help them with matters both academic and personal. The university has a fantastic student to faculty ratio of 6:1, and it is rare to find a class with more than 25 students. Most classes are discussion based, and it is rare to be lectured at for several hours.
The Social Scene
Because Seattle Pacific University is strongly tied with the Evangelical Christian church, the rules and regulations on drinking are quite strict, however, students seem to find other ways. However, if drinking isn’t really your thing, you’ll do just fine here. There are no fraternities and sororities, so partying is kept to a minimum in general. Seattle Pacific University also offers its students many sports, both varsity and intramural, which are very popular with students. There are also a large number of community service oriented clubs and organizations with which many students are involved.
The dating scene is actually quite vibrant and liberal, despite the school’s general conservative leanings. There are even lots of people with piercings and hair dye... whoa.
What’s Good
“The community is nice and small here, and in general, you really feel taken care of.”
“There’s a ton of things to do here in Seattle. The city has great nightlife, and they’re pretty lax when it comes to carding.”
“It’s nice not having any Greek organizations here. It keeps the party scene from getting too out of hand.”
What’s Bad
“The school is really too small. After awhile, you begin to get a bit stir crazy.”
“There isn’t really much of a typical collegiate party scene. It can get pretty darn boring.”
“The population here is pretty homogenous. People seem to be all the same.”
