Southeastern Oklahoma State University Admission
Southeastern Oklahoma State University Undergraduate Program Southeastern Oklahoma State University Application
The Facts
Southeastern Oklahoma State University is a rather moderately sized, public, state-funded institution located in the town of Durant, Oklahoma, and is home to over 3,000 undergraduate students and approximately 1,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The university is perhaps best known for its large commuter student population, as well as for its strong and innovative agriculture program. The university is actually divided up into several smaller graduate and undergraduate colleges, including schools of arts and sciences, business, education, music, technology, agriculture, biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, health professions, as well as the social sciences. SOSU offers its students a wide variety of primarily preprofessional majors, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of chemistry, history, music, occupational safety and health (a very unique program...), elementary education, and criminal justice.
Admission to Southeastern Oklahoma State University is not terrifically competitive, especially when compared to other public schools, however, the competition among the many instate students to earn a spot can be fierce. Last year, over 1,100 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 850 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 650 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1020 to 1090, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 18 to 24. Additionally, more than 60% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.56.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 19:1, although there are some larger state schools who manage to keep their ratio lower. In general, students give professors high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help out, but there are some professors who seem to be more interested in their own careers than in the well-being of their students.
The Social Scene
The town of Durant itself is quite small and rural, and therefore, doesn’t offer students a whole lot in the way of entertainment. However, the massive city of Dallas, Texas, is only about 90 minutes away by car, and because the majority of the students are commuters, the majority of them have cars, and often head into Dallas for a bit of weekend fun. There are only 3 fraternities and 2 sororities at SOSU, but they are quite popular with students, and basically dictate the on campus social life. The school also has more than 70 student run clubs and organizations that run the gamut from cheer leading for sporting events to putting on operas.
The dating scene can be a bit difficult at first because many students don’t live on campus, but if you stick with it, we hear there are some real catches to be found...
What's Good
“It’s nice going to a state school that feels so small and intimate. There aren’t many of us living on campus, but those of us who do form a very tightly woven group.”
“The teachers all make an effort to show us they care, and it really makes you want to work hard in their classes.”
“Dallas is really not far away, and it’s awesome being able to go there and hang out on the weekends.”
What’s Bad
“The on campus social life is incredibly dull, because everyone commutes. The campus is a ghost town on the weekends.”
“Durant has nothing to do. It could be a cute little college town, but it refuses to ever change. Ever.”
“You’d think that because so few people actually live on campus that they could make the dorms nice for us, but guess again.”
