Skidmore College Application

The Facts

Skidmore College is a moderately sized, private, traditionally structured liberal arts school located in the town of Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. It is home to over 2,286 undergraduate students and approximately 52 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is unique in that it integrates interdisciplinary studies with a tried and true liberal arts core curriculum, ensuring that students emerge well-rounded with solid critical thinking skills. The school is well known for both the theater and law programs, as well as for its emphasis on international studies and political science. Skidmore offers its students over 60 undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of areas; however, the most popular majors are in the areas of Business, English, Art, Psychology, and Government.

Admission to Skidmore College is quite competitive, particularly for such a small school. Last year, over 6,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 2,735 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 642 of those students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1170 to 1340, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 29. Additionally, over 75% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.3.

Skidmore College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 11:1, and it is rare to find an undergraduate class with more than 18 students. Most of the general education classes are team taught by various teachers so that students receive a well-rounded perspective of the particular topics they are studying. There are many research opportunities for students at the school, and Skidmore even has a Summer Research Program in which students are able to work one on one with top professors, and includes everything from creative and artistic projects to published scientific papers and presentations.

The Social Scene

The town of Saratoga Springs, New York is located at the base of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, and while it doesn’t offer students much in the way of entertainment, there are plenty of outdoor activities available. We hear that students love to go camping and hiking on the weekends, and the winters are often filled with ski trips. The town has recently embraced its status as a college town, and there are many cute cafes, shops, and bars that are quite popular with Skidmore students.

There are no fraternities or sororities at the school, and most students aren’t really partyers anyway. Most students prefer to hang out in small groups in the dorms or off-campus apartments, just chatting and socializing. Drinking does happen, but usually off campus at the town’s bars. A note to the wise: they are really strict with carding, so be careful if you’re under 21.

The dating scene definitely favors the men in this case; there are way more women than men, and we hear that cat fights are fairly frequent events.

What’s Good

“The setting is ideal here; there is beautiful nature and a beautiful town, and New York City isn’t very far and pretty easy to get to.”

“The liberal arts program is amazing, and the professors make sure that you get a really global perspective.”

“The dorms are awesome. You actually get a pretty good amount of space and comfort for the price tag.”

What’s Bad

“There really isn’t a party scene here at all. If you want to have a typical collegiate experience full of parties, then don’t come here.”

“There aren’t enough guys here, and it can be really hard to find a date.”

“The administration is pretty stingy when it comes to financial aid. It’s impossible to appeal for more money.”
