The Facts
The State University of West Georgia is a rather moderately sized, state school that was founded in 1906 as a part of the larger University System of Georgia. The school is located in the town of Carrollton, Georgia, and is home to over 6,500 undergraduate students and approximately 3,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is perhaps best known for it innovative Waring Archaeology Laboratory, where students are able to participate in hands-on excavations and carbon-dating research. The university is actually divided up into several smaller graduate and undergraduate colleges including schools of liberal arts, business, and teacher preparation. The schools offer majors in the broader areas of biological science, agriculture, business, communication and the arts, computer and physical science, engineering and environmental design, health professions (which includes a noted speech pathology program), and the social sciences. SUWG offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both liberal arts and preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of administrative systems, early childhood education, global studies, biology, as well as nursing.
Admission to the State University of West Georgia is not particularly competitive numerically, however, the number of instate students has been steadily rising with each passing admissions cycle, making it more and more competitive among these students. Last year, over 5,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,050 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 1,750 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1020 to 1100, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 28. Additionally, more than 62% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.54.
The State University of West Georgia has a fairly manageable student to faculty ratio of 33:1, however, there are other state schools of comparable size that manage to keep theirs significantly lower. While introductory classes tend to be massive, the upper level classes are quite a bit smaller, and students generally give their professors high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out when they may need assistance.
The Social Scene
The town of Carrollton itself is quite suburban and small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment besides a mall or two, however, the large and vibrant city of Atlanta is only about an hour’s drive south, and many students who own cars make it a weekend mini-road trip destination. There are quite a few national fraternities and sororities at SUWG, and many students are members of a Greek organization. The Greeks basically run on campus social life, and their parties are the highlights of many students’ weekends.
The dating scene is quite exciting, as all reports indicate; we hear there are many many hotties to be found, and many many dates to be made...
What’s Good
“Being so close to Atlanta is amazing; I love the city, and it loves me right back!”
“The party scene here is fantastic! There is always something going on nearly every night, and no one is excluded.”
“The school makes sure to provide us with lots of internship opportunities. It gives you a head start in the job market.”
What’s Bad
“The administration is very hard to get to; you have to jump through a lot of hoops on your way to speak with an actual human being.”
“The whole Greek thing can get a bit out of hand here. Sometimes, you feel like the absolute and shunned minority if you don’t belong to a house.”
“If you don’t like drinking, your social life is pretty limited. You better learn to like it if you want to meet people.”
