The Facts

Stetson University is a small liberal arts college in DeLand, Florida that is anything but ordinary. The school is known for its unconventional majors and programs as well as its commitment to pre- professional studies, giving students the edge on their rapidly approaching careers. The school has three undergraduate colleges including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration and the School of Music. Some of the most popular majors at the school include majors in business, education, psychology, music, and political science. Stetson even offers a major in digital arts where students combine many disciplines, both visual and aural, to create unique pieces of work.

Admission to Stetson grows increasingly competitive each year as the word gets out around the country about just how unique the university is. However, not many people apply, so your chances of being accepted is you apply are pretty strong. Last year, about 1,992 students applied and 1,510 were admitted. Of those, only 529 students actually enrolled. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1330 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 27. Over 58% of admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.54.

The core requirements at Stetson are quite intense, and include classes in ethics, English, math, communication, religion, civilization, foreign language, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, and contemporary culture. However, with a student to teacher ratio of a mere 11:1, the classes are rarely larger than 20 students, and the professors make sure their students get all the assistance they need.

The Social Scene

The town of DeLand doesn’t really offer a lot in the way of activity, so a popular weekend activity includes excursions to the nearby cities and beaches of Daytona and Orlando. Many students also create their own fun on campus, often in the form of drinking and hard partying. There are 13 Greek organizations on campus, and a remarkable 62% of students belong to some sort of frat or sorority. The Greek houses tend to dominate the social scene, but they also do quite a bit in the way of community service.

The campus itself is quite beautiful, and is complemented by lots of greenery and trees. The buildings are constantly being updated, and recently a new student athletic center was built complete with exercise studios, dance studios, a cardio room and an Olympic size pool. Students also say that the dorms are quite nice, and give you plenty of leg room. Students with similar interests are even clustered together to create a sense of coherence and community.

The dating outlook is particularly good for the guys; there are over 24% more women at Stetson than men, so you will have plenty of opportunities to ask someone out.

What's Good

“The classes are really small and discussion based, which makes for a much more interesting experience than large lectures.”

“The campus is gorgeous and really tight knit. Everyone knows your name here, it’s like Cheers.”

“There is always a party happening any day of the week to ease your troubled mind.”

What's Bad

“If you aren’t into the whole Greek thing, there isn’t a whole lot for you to do.”

“There are a lot of kids here who aren’t that serious about their studies. It’s annoying for those of us who work really hard.”

“The school is a bit too small. Everyone here is really nosy and gossip spreads like wildfire.”
