Stonehill College Admission
Stonehill College Undergraduate Program
Stonehill College Application
The Facts
Stonehill College is a rather moderately sized, private liberal arts and sciences school affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church located in the town of Easton, Massachusetts, and is home to over 2,220 undergraduate students and a mere 15 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is run by the Holy Cross Fathers, who are Catholic monks that also run the prestigious University of Notre Dame. Stonehill is unique in that it aims to cultivate students as whole persons, not just ‘students.’ They receive a wide-reaching general education which includes courses in moral reasoning, ethics, English language and literature, history, social sciences, natural sciences, as well as foreign languages. Stonehill offers its students a wide variety of over 30 undergraduate degrees, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of psychology, communication, biology, English, as well as accounting.
Admission to Stonehill College is quite competitive, particularly for such a small liberal arts school. In fact, the number of applicants has been steadily increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 4,900 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 2,400 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 570 of those students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1270, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 27. Additionally, over 86% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.55.
Stonehill College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 14:1, and it is rare to find an undergraduate class with more than 25 students, and they usually have less. One of the main draws of the school is in fact the professors; they are genuinely interested in the well-being of their students, and are almost always available and ready to give assistance to whomever may require it.
The Social Scene
The town of Easton is very wealthy, and while it may be well above most of the students’ budgets, there are many things to do in the town such as coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and stores. Most of the students at Stonehill own cars, and the cities of Boston and Providence are fairly quick drives, and we hear both cities are popular weekend road trip destinations. The Stonehill campus itself is unique and quite beautiful, and many students say it is their favorite part of the college.
There are no fraternities or sororities at Stonehill, but most students don’t seem to mind at all. The college isn’t known as a party school, and most students would prefer to keep it that way. They are fairly serious about their academics, and acknowledge that this is their main purpose for attending college. There is drinking that occurs, but most of it is off campus, as the administration is quite strict when it comes to underage drinking.
The dating scene is just as quaint as the town itself; you can expect a lot of old fashioned romanticism and chivalry.
What’s Good
“The campus is so gorgeous, and nearly all of the buildings are part of the national register of historic buildings.”
“Housing is guaranteed for all four years, which is great because off campus housing is incredibly expensive in this area.”
“You are allowed to actually focus on your work here. There aren’t any distractions to keep you from what’s really important.”
What’s Bad
“I really miss having that traditional college experience with studying during the week and parties on the weekends. Here, it’s all studying all the time.”
“If you don’t have a car, you can begin to feel quite isolated. You can’t really go anywhere beyond Easton.”
“The student population is really homogenous, and there isn’t much cultural variety, which gets quite old.”
