Susquehanna University Application
The Facts
Susquehanna University is a rather small, private liberal arts and sciences school affiliated with the Lutheran Church located in the town of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students. The university is actually divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of arts, humanities and communications, business, as well as natural and social sciences. The school is perhaps most well known for its business school, which turns out some of the top CEOs and managers in the nation. The school also has a terrific biology program, as well as a stellar English department. Susquehanna University offers its students over 50 undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of both liberal arts and pre professionally oriented areas, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business, communications, biology, psychology, as well as elementary education.
Admission to Susquehanna University is quite competitive, although not nearly as competitive as some of the other East Coast liberal arts and sciences schools. Last year, more than 2,400 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,660 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 500 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1060 to 1240, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 28. Additionally, over 65% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.54.
Susquehanna University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and in general, students say that their teachers are very approachable and accessible, and always willing to help a student who may need it. It is rare to find an undergraduate class with more than 20 students, and there are usually far less. Students also remark that there is a fair amount of competition between students, however, it is usually healthy and well-intended. The core curriculum spans a wide range of topics, and includes a course called College 101 that helps students develop the base skills they will need to get the best out of their college experience.
The Social Scene
The town of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania is rather small, although there are some cute shops, cafes, and a couple of bars that are fairly popular with students. There are plenty of outdoor opportunities, as Selinsgrove is located on the banks of the beautiful Susquehanna River. We hear there is a lot of ice skating in the winter, and even more swimming when weather permits.
There are quite a few fraternities and sororities at the school, and nearly 25% of the student body joins a Greek organization at some point. The Greeks basically govern on campus social life, and throw occasional parties, usually at off campus venues, as the administration is extremely strict when it comes to on campus drinking and partying.
The dating scene is far from diverse; you should probably expect lots of J. Crew clad prepsters. But hey, if that’s your thing, then you might just be on cloud nine at SU.
What’s Good
“People are really nice and inclusive here. If you are a new student or a transfer, you should have no problem fitting in.”
“The core curriculum is actually challenging, and is a nice departure from things I learned in high school.”
“The campus is beautiful, and there are tons of trees and green space to find some peace and quiet in between classes.”
What’s Bad
“The student body is really homogenous. Everyone pretty much looks alike, and it gets very boring.”
“The administration seems like it doesn’t trust us. It seems like we’re constantly being monitored and watched.”
“It can be difficult to get into the classes you want, and if you’re an underclassman, you can pretty much forget it.”
