The Facts

Tri-State University is a rather small, private independent university located in the town of Angola, Indiana, and is home to over 1,050 undergraduate students and approximately 150 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s 4 undergraduate schools or graduate school, which offer academic programs in the areas of engineering and technology, business, education, as well as the arts and sciences. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a large program with majors as diverse as accounting and recreation and leisure services) communications and the arts, computer and physical science, (which includes an innovative program in information science) education, engineering and environmental design, (also a large program with a unique major in industrial administration) health professions, as well as the social sciences. Tri-State University offers its students a fairly wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of engineering, business, as well as education.

Admission to Tri-State University is not terrifically competitive, however, the number of qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 1,850 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 1,330 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 340 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1150, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 30. Additionally, more than 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.

Tri-State University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and while some of the general education courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar course where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture. Professors get high marks from students in terms of accessibility and willingness to help out; it is clear that they love their jobs.

The Social Scene

The town of Angola is quite small and family-oriented, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment. The campus is also pretty far away from any major cities, making it difficult to seek out activities in urban areas. The university is home to 14 national and local fraternities and sororities, and many students join a Greek organization at some point in their collegiate careers. The Greeks basically govern on campus social life, and the numerous parties they throw are the focal point of many students’ weekends. The campus is fairly active and vibrant in comparison with the surrounding area.

The dating scene may not be very diverse, but students are friendly, and quite good-looking...

What’s Good

“There is a really wonderful sense of community here. People are quite friendly and inclusive, which is nice to see.”

“Even though we’re not a very big school, the party scene is incredible! There’s always something going on.”

“The professors are amazing here; they’re obviously very dedicated to their students.”

What’s Bad

“There is absolutely nothing to do off-campus. You begin to get pretty stir-crazy.”

“The only thing to do around here is drink and party, which becomes very monotonous.”

“I wish there were more majorial options offered here. It feels kind of limited sometimes.”
