The Facts
Truman State University is a rather moderately sized, public school located in the town of Kirksville, Missouri, and is home to over 5,400 undergraduate students and approximately 240 graduate and part-time professional students. The education provides students both a traditional liberal arts education as well as a fair amount of preprofessional and interdisciplinary education. All students are required to take a core curriculum consisting of three broad areas including courses in writing, speech, elementary functions, statistics, computer literacy, communication, physical and natural sciences, history, philosophy and religion, fine arts, literature, mathematics, as well as foreign languages. Truman State University offers its students more than 50 undergraduate majors in a wide variety of areas and disciplines, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business administration, biology, psychology, English, as well as communications.
Admission to Truman State University is not terrifically competitive numerically, however, those who do apply tend to be quite self-motivated and academically successful in the past. Last year, more than 4,335 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,625 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 1,320 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1350, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 30. Additionally, over 84% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.8.
Truman State University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and in general, most of the students give their professors very high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out whenever they may require. Many students say that their professors are more mentors and friends than teachers and instructors. An interesting note: the school’s journalism program is quickly becoming one of the best and most respected programs in the nation, and its students are commonly recruited by the nation’s top newspapers and magazines.
The Social Scene
The of Kirksville, Missouri is a rather small town, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, the people are friendly, and generally quite accommodating to Truman State students. Most of the social scene takes place on campus, and there is a newly constructed student activities and athletics center which is a popular hangout, and the school itself hosts many activities including dances and even concerts. There are several fraternities and sororities at the school, and they throw popular parties where drinking is definitely one of the most popular modes of social interaction.
The dating scene is quite vibrant, and although the students aren’t the most diverse, they are apparently quite good looking and ready to please.
