The Facts

Tulane University is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city that is home to some of the biggest, loudest and rowdiest parties known to man, and the university is no exception. However, it is also known for its fantastic academics, and the students seem to be well-accomplished in the art of balancing a terrific education and a crazy social life. The school itself is not terribly large, with an undergraduate population of around 6,000 students and a graduate population of about 4,580 students.

Tulane is made up of several undergraduate schools including business, architecture, engineering, and two schools for the arts and sciences.

There are a huge variety of majors offered, and some of the most popular are business, engineering, social sciences, history, psychology, biology and life science. Core requirements inlude courses in humanities, fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, math, writing, foreign language and western and non-western civilization.

The school prides itself on turning out extremely well rounded and diversified students. Admission to Tulane University is quite competitive; last year, over 14,000 students applied while only 7,801 were admitted. Eventually, 1,684 students actually enrolled. The Class of 2004 had an average SAT score ranging from 1240 to 1420 and an average ACT score ranging from 28 to 32. Over 91% of admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class.

The faculty is known for being highly accomplished; the school’s scientific reputation draws some of the best academics and researchers from the field. Students also frequently remark that the faculty really wants to see them succeed, and make themselves very visibly available to help a struggling student along in a particular class.

The Social Scene

The school does have a reputation as a major party school as it is situated in a city that is perhaps best known for its love of a good time. (i.e. Mardi Gras) Apparently, around Mardi Gras, the campus population all but doubles in size, as everyone’s friends invite themselves down to be at the center of the action. On weekends, students head out to any one of the bars and clubs throughout New Orleans and drink their cares from the week away-- heavily. The school has made an effort to keep its campus dry, but it has largely been a failure.

There is Greek Life at Tulane, and over 70% of students chose to join an organization, however, they do not have much influence on social life, as the city offers far more alluring options. They do host parties, however, most of their effort is put into various community service projects. Furthermore, the student body is quite diverse, and students say that even if you don’t like to party, there is definitely a social niche for you.

Desperate for Mardi Gras beads, girls will frequently bare their bosoms. Unfortunately, guys are usually not so desperate for some invariable reason.

What’s Good

“New Orleans is simply the best party town in the whole world, and is perfect for college students.”

“The academics, especially the sciences, are top notch. They were the whole reason I chose the school.”

“Even though the school is somewhat of an ‘Animal House,’ when it comes time to get the nose to the grindstone, students really pull their own weight.”

What’s Bad

“If you don’t like to party, there isn’t a whole lot to do.”

“It’s hot here. Really really really really hot. My ink melts, I swear.”

“It’s hard to do anything if you don’t have a car. You can always hitch a ride, but you feel kind of lame.”
