University of Dubuque Application
The Facts
The University of Dubuque is a rather small, private institution located in the appropriately titled town of Dubuque, Iowa, and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The school is home to over 1,050 undergraduate students and approximately 250 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in one of the 3 undergraduate or 2 graduate schools, which offer academic programs in the areas of environmental sciences, business, aviation, education, computer graphics, as well as interactive media. These academic programs offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a popular program offering majors in accounting, business administration, as well as management) communications and the arts, (home to a fantastic English department) computer and physical science, education, (a very popular major) engineering and environmental design, as well as the social sciences. The University of Dubruque offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business, environmental science, education, aviation management, flight operations, as well as computer graphics.
Admission to the University of Dubuque is not terribly competitive, however the overall number of highly qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 750 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 610 of those students were admitted. Eventually however, only about 300 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1000 to 1080 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 30. Additionally, more than 50% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
The University of Dubuque has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 21:1, which isn’t outstanding for a school of such diminutive size. However, many professors teach many classes in order to keep the sizes small. Lecture courses are rarely held at any level, and the majority of classes are based around discussion and debate, so that all students get a chance to have their voices heard.
The Social Scene
The town of Dubuque is rather suburban and family oriented, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, the large city of Chicago is only about a three hours’ drive away, and many students do own cars, making weekend road trips into the city a popular option. The university is home to 8 local fraternities and sororities that are quite popular with students. In fact, many students join a Greek organization at some point during their stay at the university. The Greeks basically govern the on campus social life, and their weekend parties are the highlight of many a student’s social calendar.
The dating scene isn’t very diverse, but the students are all similarly attractive...

“The administration is really accommodating, and they do everything they can to make sure you’re doing well.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t really anything to do on campus besides party at the Greek houses. It gets kind of old after awhile.”
“Getting into Chicago is impossible because you just end up sitting in traffic the whole weekend.”
“Some of the professors think that they’re class is the only one on your roster...”
