The Facts
The University of Florida is a massive state school located in the town of Gainesville, Florida. The university houses over 30,977 undergraduate students and approximately 13,876 graduate students. The university is made of a staggering 20 colleges offering over 100 majors. Some of the most popular include majors in business administration and management, finance, psychology, political science and government, public relations and communications. Before students can begin to explore their majors, they must complete an extensive amount of required coursework including classes in composition, math, science, humanities, various areas of science, and cultural diversity.
Admission to the school is surprisingly competitive for the large student population; last year, over 22,973 students applied and 12,029 were admitted. Eventually, only 6,596 were admitted. The students had a combined average SAT score ranging from 1140 to 1340 and a comprehensive ACT score ranging 24 to 29. Over 79% of admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.9. These high statistics may be surprising for a large state school, however, U Florida has constantly been attempting to up their standards for admission and draw more out of state students, which has been remarkably successful.
Many students complain of feeling pretty anonymous, especially within their introductory classes. The student to faculty ratio is a less than intimate 22:1, and this makes it tough for students to be very close to their professors. Despite these problems, students say that if you are active and seek out your teachers, they tend to be quite helpful.
The Social Scene
Like many large state schools, U Florida is known for being a party school. The Gators football games are perhaps the biggest social events of the year, and the rowdiest. Students have massive parties nearly every day of the week, and drinking is definitely the prevailing activity, especially in keg form.
The Greek system is a big influence at the school, with over 30% of students belonging to either a fraternity or a sorority. They are definitely a huge influence on campus and throughout the town, and they actively recruit freshmen as soon as they step onto campus. Although, for students that aren’t into Greek life, there are over 450 student- run clubs and organizations for nearly every interest under the sun.
The town of Gainesville is pretty sleepy and not very cosmopolitan. The campus basically is the town, and anything beyond its perimeters isn’t really worth checking out. However, the campus is so chock full of stuff, there isn’t any need to leave!
With so many students at the university, every shape, size, and persuasion of person is available for perusal on the dating market. You will not be lonely!

“People here are way too rowdy. They tend to just forget that they are actually here to learn.”
