The Facts

The University of Indianapolis is a rather moderately sized, private institution located in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university is home to over 2,100 undergraduate students and approximately 1,800 graduate and part-time professional students, who are able to take courses in one of the university’s 5 undergraduate or 7 graduate schools. The schools offer academic programs in the areas of education, business, nursing, as well as the arts and sciences. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a large program with majors as diverse as accounting and entrepreneurial studies) communications and the arts, (which is home to a wonderful program in broadcasting) computer and physical science, education, (also a very large program with majors as diverse as art and athletic training) engineering and environmental design, (home to a unique program in commercial art) health professions, (which has an innovative program in art therapy) as well as the social sciences. The University of Indianapolis offers its students a remarkably wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of education, nursing, biology, chemistry, as well as business.

Admission to the University of Indianapolis is quite competitive among those who apply, and the number of highly qualified applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 3,260 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 2,365 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 620 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1120 to 1210, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 31. Additionally, more than 84% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.78.

The University of Indianapolis has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and while some of the general education courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar class in which students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture. Professors also get high marks from students in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out when they request it.

The Social Scene

The city of Indianapolis is quite vibrant, and offers students many things in the way of entertainment including restaurants, museums, concerts, shopping, as well as plenty of bars and clubs. The university has no fraternities or sororities, and most students seem to prefer it that way. They would rather hang out in small groups or explore the city. The school does boast, however, over 45 student groups and organizations that run the gamut from a literary magazine to a jazz band.
