University of Kansas Application
The Facts
University of Kansas is a large public state-funded school located in the town of Lawrence , Kansas . It houses approximately 18,238 undergraduate students, and about 7,714 graduate students. The school
is actually considered by many to be one of the best public schools in the state. The university is comprised of 11 smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of liberal arts and sciences, allied health, architecture and urban design, business, education, engineering, fine arts, journalism and mass communications, nursing, pharmacy, and social welfare. One of the perks for students who wish to apply is that, while they initially apply for one of the schools, they are automatically also considered for admission to the schools of arts and
sciences.
Admission to the school is growing increasingly competitive, as the school's prestige and national recognition is constantly growing. Last year, the admitted students boasted an average comprehensive ACT score
ranging from 21 to 27. Over 54% of those admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.4.
The school offers many fantastic programs of study, and some of the most popular with students include majors in biological sciences, engineering, psychology, journalism, and business. The school also offers several fantastic programs in foreign languages, which are popular minors for students. The university has housed many Fulbright scholars throughout the years, and the university has a fantastic honors program offered for the brightest students. Students say that the atmosphere at the school can be quite competitive, but students do know how to relax. The school has a bad student to teacher ratio of 19:1, but students say they do make themselves accessible during office hours.
The Social Scene
The town of Lawrence is quite liberal, especially in a notably conservative state such as Kansas . Despite being a fairly small town, it caters to college students by offering many music and entertainment venues as well as clubs, bars, cafes and cute shops. The U Kansas bus system is quite efficient and gets students around to all areas of the town. Most students don't have cars because the parking situation is so terrible.
The Greek system is quite extensive at U Kansas, and many students join fraternities and sororities. The campus is officially alcohol-free, so students love to hang out in bars on the weekends, and apparently, most
bars are pretty loose on carding. Kansas City is fairly nearby, and many students head into the city on weekends where there is great shopping, restaurants, and other entertainment options. The dating scene is great; all-American boys and girls show typical Southern courtesy and beaming smiles.
What’s Good
“Everyone here is amazingly friendly. Even if they are total strangers, they will smile at you when they pass you by.”
"The academics are awesome; nearly every interest under the sun is catered to in one way or another.”
“The party scene is amazing, even though the school is officially dry. People know how to get around that policy!”
What’s Bad
“The town is pretty dull; there are a lot of farmers and the like, which don't make for too much excitement.”
“The classes are ridiculously huge. Even some of the more advanced classes have way too many people.”
“The Greek students are pretty annoying... they feel like they're entitled to rule the school.”
