The Facts

The University of Saint Francis is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The university is one of the oldest institutions in the state, as it was founded in the year 1890 by the Sisters of Saint Francis, and has been an active university ever since. The school is home to over 1,200 undergraduate students and approximately 500 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The school’s academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a popular program including majors in accounting and business administration and management) communications and the arts, (home to a great department in the fine arts) education, (the largest program in the university) engineering and environmental design, (which only includes a major in environmental science) health professions, as well as the social sciences. The University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, offers its students a fairly wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of nursing, education, history, business, as well as art.

Admission to the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, is not ridiculously competitive, however, the number of highly qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 934 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 694 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 352 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 960 to 1050, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 52% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.

The University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and many students agree that one of the best facets of attending the school are the small class sizes. There are some lecture courses, but they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar class where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture.

The Social Scene

The town of Fort Wayne is actually more of a burgeoning city, and offers students all the amenities of a rapidly growing suburban area. However, it is very family oriented, and doesn’t really offer students a whole lot in the way of entertainment. The university has no fraternities or sororities, however, students seem to prefer it that way. It is definitely not a party school, and although drinking does happen, it isn’t the main mode of social interaction for students. The school does have over 25 student groups and organizations that run the gamut from cheer leading to radio and television stations.

The dating scene isn’t terribly diverse, and the administration has some strict rules about “sleep overs...”

What’s Good

“The school feels very familial to me. It’s a really close-knit community.”

“The facilities are wonderful, particularly if you are doing a lot of scientific research.”

“The administration does a good job keeping us busy; there are always concerts, exhibitions and other things going on.”

What’s Bad

“The administration is extremely strict, and it can feel oppressive to say the least.”

“The student body here is very homogenous, and we have virtually no diversity.”

“Fort Wayne isn’t the worst place to go to school, although it isn’t the best either.”
