The Facts
Upper Iowa University is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Fayette, Iowa, and is home to over 700 undergraduate students and approximately 25 part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, although the school is known for its strong focus on the classic liberal arts education. The university’s academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of agriculture, (home to innovative programs in conservation and regulation) biological science, business, (a rather large and popular program with majors as diverse as accounting as well as recreation and leisure services) communications and the arts, (home to wonderful programs in the fine arts as well as graphic design) computer and physical science, education, (a popular program with a hard to find major in athletic training) health professions, (which includes a popular major in health care administration) as well as the social sciences. Upper Iowa University offers its students a rather wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business, education, preprofessional science, conservation management, as well as information systems management.
Admission to Upper Iowa University is not terrifically competitive, however, the overall number of qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 725 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 654 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 300 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1090 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 25. Additionally, more than 55% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
Upper Iowa University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 19:1, however, there are many other private schools of comparable size that manage to keep their number significantly lower. It is rare, however, to find any lecture courses, and most classes are discussion based, giving every student a chance to have their voice heard.
The Social Scene
The town of Fayette, Iowa is quite rural, and is hardly a town at all in fact, so it doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment. Most of the social activity takes place on campus, and students seem to be pretty good at finding things to keep them occupied. The university is home to 11 local and national fraternities and sororities which are extremely popular with students; in fact, about 42% of the entire student body belongs to a Greek organization of some sort. The Greeks basically run the on campus social life, and their weekend parties are what keeps the social scene alive.
The dating scene is very very very small and very very very limited but the students are very very very attractive... you do the math...
What’s Good
“I love how familial the school is; it’s so small that you really know everyone here.”
“The administration does an awesome job answering questions and making things very clear to you.”
“The classes really give you a chance to work through questions and tease out the answers by discussing them with the rest of your class.”
What’s Bad
“There is nothing to do around here! If you want to get off campus, you won’t find much.”
“The only thing to do on campus is hang out at parties and get drunk, and even that gets old after awhile.”
“The school is way too small for my tastes. I don’t like everyone knowing everything going on.”
