Wake Forest College Application
The Facts
Wake Forest College is a rather moderately sized private school located in the town of Winston Salem, North Caroline and is home to over 4,100 undergraduate students and approximately 2,500 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is perhaps best known for its strong business programs, as well as for its athletic programs. Wake Forest College is actually divided up into several smaller undergraduate and graduate schools; the undergraduate schools include the Wake Forest College which include the general studies program as well as programs of arts and sciences, and the Wayne Calloway School of Business and Accountancy. The graduate schools include schools of law, medicine, management, arts and sciences, as well as divinity. Some of the most popular majors with students at Wake Forest college include majors in the areas of business, international relations, psychology, history, as well as English.
Admission to Wake Forest has become increasingly competitive over the years. Last year, over 7,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,000 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 2,000 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1420 to 1550, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 28 to 31. Additionally, more than 60% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.7.
Students at Wake Forest say one of the major perks about their school is the large amount of one on one, personalized attention they receive from their professors. It is rare for students to be taught by T.A.s, and even freshmen have the chance to be taught by some of the school’s most distinguished professors. The school’s motto is “for humanity,” and that theme definitely echoes throughout the school’s curriculum and treatment of its students. The student to faculty ratio of 10:1 is a terrific indicator of the college’s atmosphere; intimate, but full of worldly resources.
The Social Scene
The town of Winston Salem is rather small, and doesn’t really over students much in the way of inexpensive entertainment. Most social life takes place on campus in the form of weekend partying and binge drinking. Greek life is definitely a big factor at the school, and a large percentage of students join within the first two years of their college career.
Drinking is definitely a popular mode of social interaction, but if kegging isn’t really your scene, it’s pretty easy to find groups of students that will hang out sans alcohol. The campus life office does a pretty great job of promoting other more wholesome forms of activity including dance parties, concerts, and some terrific guest speakers. The school’s religious affiliation definitely can be felt, and there are many students who head to church faithfully every Sunday morning.
The dating scene is fairly vibrant we’re told. It can be difficult to find anyone who doesn’t wear Abercrombie and Fitch, but if you dig, they do indeed exist.
What’s Good
“You feel really welcome here from day one. The student life office is really good at keeping you occupied so you don’t ever get bored.”
“The sports scene is really great here, especially for such a small school. And everyone has a lot of school spirit as well.”
“The campus is really beautiful and quite well-kept. Just walking from class to class is a very pleasant experience.”
What’s Bad
“People tend to be very cliquey here. There isn’t a whole lot of mixing between groups.”
“There isn’t really anything for us college students to do in the town itself. It hasn’t really embraced its status as a college town.”
“The frat people are really annoying. Sometimes you feel like if you aren’t a member of the houses, you don’t really have any say.”
