Wartburg College Application
The Facts
Wartburg College is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Waverly, Iowa, and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The college is actually one of the oldest institutions in the state, as it was founded as early as the year 1852. The college is home to over 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 100 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The college’s academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (home to a rather innovative biochemistry program) business, (a very popular program with majors as diverse as accounting and international business management) communications and the arts, (home to a unique program in applied music) computer and physical science, education, (a very large program which is home to a terrific program in social journalism) engineering and environmental design, health professions, (which includes an innovative program in music therapy) as well as the social sciences. Wartburg College offers its students a remarkably wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of math, biology, chemistry, education, as well as business.
Admission to Wartburg College is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply, however, the overall number of applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 800 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 610 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 410 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1040 to 1110 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 31. Additionally, more than 75% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.75.
Wartburg College has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, however, there are other private schools of comparable size who manage to keep their number lower. However, it is very rare to find any lecture courses, and most classes are based around spirited discussions and intellectual discourse.
The Social Scene
The town of Waverly is quite small, and isn’t really located near any major cities, so students don’t have a lot of options in the way of entertainment. Most of the action happens right on campus, where there are plenty of activities for students to get involved in, including over 100 student groups and organizations that run the gamut from a newspaper to a student art organization. The school has no fraternities or sororities, which limits the party scene to some extent, but students don’t seem to mind very much.
The dating scene may not be the most diverse in the world, but people are friendly, and that’s what really counts, right?
What’s Good
“I really love that the classes are so small; it makes them a lot more interesting.”
“The campus is quite lovely, and just walking from class to class is pleasant.”
“The faculty and administration obviously love their jobs; they do the best they can to make our lives run smoothly.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t anything to do around here besides run through corn fields. Literally.”
“I think things would be more exciting if we had some Greek organizations. The party scene might actually exist!”
“There are often on campus housing shortages, and it isn’t easy to find things off campus.”
