The Facts
Washburn University of Topeka is a rather moderately size publicly funded, independently governed, state-coordinate institution, (take a big breath...) that is located in the city of Topeka, Kansas, and is home to over 4,000 undergraduate students and approximately 3,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university's 4 undergraduate schools or 4 graduate schools which offer academic programs in the areas of the arts and sciences, law, business, nursing, as well as the applied sciences. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (an always large and popular program with majors as diverse as accounting and business economics) communications and the arts, (home to a wonderful department of the performing arts) computer and physical science, education, (also a large and popular program with majors in art, and reading education, among others) engineering and environmental design, (which only offers a unique major in technological management) health professions, as well as the social sciences. Washburn University offers its students a rather large variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of natural sciences, art, music, business administration, criminal justice, as well as nursing.
Admission to Washburn University of Topeka is not competitive in the least, as most students who apply are admitted. Last year, over 1,705 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 1,705 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 740 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1060 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 27. Additionally, more than 60% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.68.
Washburn University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 19:1, however, there are other state-schools of comparable size that manage to keep their number significantly lower. Some of the general education courses are held in lecture halls, but they are usually supplemented by a smaller seminar course where students get to discuss the content of previous lectures.
The Social Scene
The city of Topeka may not be terribly cosmopolitan, but it does offer students plenty to do in the way of entertainment, including clubs, bars, restaurants, shops and concerts. The campus also has its fair amount of activity, and is home to 8 national and local fraternities and sororities. Many students belong to a Greek organization, and the numerous weekend parties they throw are wildly popular with non-Greeks as well. The school is also home to over 100 student run groups and organizations that run the gamut from choir to a computer organization.
The dating scene isn't very diverse, but the city of Topeka is available for your perusal...
