Wichita State University Application
The Facts
Wichita State University is a rather large public institution located in the appropriately titled city of Wichita, Kansas and is home to over 8,000 undergraduate students and approximately 6,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university's 6 undergraduate schools or 1 graduate school which offer academic programs in the areas of the liberal arts and sciences, business, engineering, education, as well as health professions. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a very large and very popular program with majors as diverse as accounting as well as sports management) communications and the arts, (home to wonderful programs in the visual and performing arts) computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, (home to a terrific and rather innovative program in aeronautical engineering) health professions, (which offers majors as diverse as health care administration and speech pathology) as well as the social sciences. Wichita State University offers its students a rather wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of physicians assistant, musical theater, speech pathology, management, nursing, as well as elementary education.
Admission to Wichita State University is not terribly competitive, however, the overall number of qualified applicants has been steadily increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 4,220 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 2,625 of those students were admitted. Eventually however, only about 1,370 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1080 to 1120 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 30. Additionally, more than 52% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.65.
Wichita State University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, which is quite good considering the school's size. While some of the general education and required courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by significantly smaller seminar courses where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture in detail.
The Social Scene
The city of Wichita may not be the most cosmopolitan, but it offers students plenty in the way of entertainment including clubs, bars, restaurants, concerts and shopping. Most students own cars as the public transportation system isn't very efficient. The campus itself has a fair amount of activity, and is home to 18 national fraternities and sororities which are quite popular with students. The Greeks basically govern the on campus social life, and their weekend parties are very well attended by Greeks and non-Greeks alike. Drinking is definitely the most popular mode of social interaction at these soirees, usually by way of keg.
The dating scene offers a little of something for everyone; just don't expect any romantic candlelit dinners... party anyone?
What's Good

"The party scene is great here, and it's a nice way to meet new people in such a large school."
What's Bad
"The Greeks basically run things here, and it's hard to get involved if you aren't in one of their organizations."
"There is always a shortage of on campus housing, which makes things really tough."
"There are a TON of general education requirements that are a pain to get through."
