The Facts
The College of Wooster is a rather small liberal arts and sciences private school located in the town of Wooster, Ohio. The college is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students, and places a major emphasis on independent research projects as a pivotal part of the students'
education. There is also a focus on interdisciplinary studies, and the core curriculum is very well-rounded to ensure that students graduate with a wide and worldly perspective. The college offers its students a wide range of majors, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of English, history, communication, psychology, and biology.
Admission to Wooster is not terrifically competitive number-wise, however, those students who do apply tend to be quite driven and are drawn to Wooster 's independent studies programs. Last year, over 2,600 students applied for admission and approximately 1,800 were accepted.
Eventually however, only about 560 of those admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1310, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 28. Additionally, over 68% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.58.
The College of Wooster has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 12:1, and the school places an emphasis on having classes in small discussion groups. Wooster students learn to think critically, and by graduation, are expected to be able to concretely voice their opinions and quantify them. The teachers are very dedicated, and make sure they leave as much time free to help out students as possible. Students say that they know most of their professors personally, and often continue a correspondence long after graduation.
The Social Scene
The town of Wooster, Ohio doesn't really offer very much in the way of entertainment, and only has a few of the essentials like a couple of grocery and drug stores. The lack of external activities doesn't seem to bother students too much. The Wooster campus is usually full of activities every day of the week, and students at the college are constantly coming up with new ways to bring the campus together. There are no official fraternities or sororities at the college, however, there are some student-run “sections” and clubs that are gender exclusive, and operate very much like national Greek organizations.
The Wooster campus has a great student center with an on-campus pub called “The Underground,” as well as some study, T.V., and game rooms.
Drinking is definitely a popular activity, however, it doesn't really interfere with academics. The college actually has a Bacchanalia Festival, that celebrates what else-- wine!
The dating scene is just as jovial as the people on campus; expect lots of friendliness and eagerness to please...
