The Facts

Youngstown State University is a rather moderately sized, public institution that was founded in 1908 as a commuter school, and is located in the town of Youngstown, Ohio. The university is home to over 7,500 undergraduate students and approximately 3,200 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to study in graduate and undergraduate programs in the areas of the arts and sciences, education, business, engineering, fine and performing arts, as well as health and human services. These programs offer broader majors in the areas of biological science, (which has a interesting nutrition program) business, communications and the arts, (with a unique program in rhetoric) computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, health professions (which include a wide spectrum of premedical degrees), as well as social sciences, which is the largest majorial program by far. Youngstown State University offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of early childhood education, management, nursing, pre medicine, nursing, as well as computer science and programming.

Admission to Youngstown State University is not competitive in the least, particularly numerically, as nearly all applicants tend to be accepted. Last year, over 3,760 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,650 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 2,200 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1000 to 1040, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 25. Additionally, more than 40% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.42.

Youngstown State University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 23 to 1, and there are approximately 407 full time and adjunct faculty members. Most of the general education and introductory classes are held in large lecture halls, however, most of the more specific majorial classes are rarely above 25 students. In general, professors get high marks from students for accessibility, but some seem less than willing to help students outside of class.

The Social Scene

The town of Youngstown itself is quite suburban, however, it doesn’t really have much geared toward college students. However, the town is located about 65 miles southwest of the much larger city of Cleveland, and as most students own cars, the city is a very popular weekend destination to take advantage of its culture and nightlife. The school is home to 8 national fraternities and 5 sororities; the Greek life is quite popular, as over 7% of the student population belongs to a Greek organization of some sort. The Greeks are basically responsible for the on campus social life, and the parties they throw are popular with the majority of students.

The dating scene is quite diverse, and we hear that people are very very friendly and certainly eager to please...

What’s Good

“The people here are really inclusive and quite friendly; even the Greeks are a positive force on campus, and non-exclusive.”

“It’s nice having Cleveland so close; it’s like going on a mini-vacation for the weekend.”

“There are a ton of student clubs and organizations to get involved in here. You can really make a difference on campus.”

What’s Bad

“A lot of students are commuters, which can make for pretty dull weekends and nights. It seems like everyone either goes home or goes to Cleveland.”

“Even though our school isn’t massive, the administration acts like it. It’s very difficult to speak with a human being.”

“If you stay on campus, the only activity you will really find is drinking. If it isn’t your thing and you live on campus, you better learn to like it, or ignore it.”
